# Liberty Mutual and Safeco Loss of Use Coverage: How Long It Pays, Your Limit, and Where an RV Fits

Published October 7, 2026. Last updated October 7, 2026.

If a covered loss leaves your home unlivable, your Liberty Mutual or Safeco policy pays the extra cost of living somewhere else while it is repaired. The two brands use different policy forms, so the clock depends on which one you hold. Your dollar limit is printed on your declarations page.

Agile RV Housing is an independent temporary housing provider. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by Liberty Mutual or Safeco, and coverage decisions on any claim are made by the policyholder's claims representative.

## Liberty Mutual and Safeco loss of use: the short answer

Both brands pay the necessary increase in your living expenses so your household can keep its normal standard of living during the repair. The Liberty Mutual homeowners form we read has no month cap. The Safeco homeowners form stops at 24 months. Your dollar limit is on your declarations page.

How long it pays

Liberty Mutual sample form FMHO 943: the shortest time required to repair or replace the damage, or for your household to settle elsewhere, with no month cap. Safeco sample form HOM-7030: the shortest time required, not exceeding 24 months.

The dollar limit

One total limit for everything under Coverage D, set when the policy was written. Neither form ties it to a percentage of your dwelling coverage.

Where to find your own limit

The Coverage D line on your declarations page. Liberty Mutual's form names it Loss of Use. Safeco's names it Additional Living Expense and Loss of Rent. If you can't find it, ask your agent or claims representative to read you that line.

If you're unsure how these numbers apply to your repair timeline, call us at (614) 655-4286 (+16146554286) and we will go through your declarations page with you. To see how other insurers set these limits, compare loss of use time limits across 11 insurance companies (https://agilervhousing.com/insurance-carriers).

## What does Liberty Mutual loss of use coverage pay for?

It pays the increase in your living costs caused by the loss, not your normal bills. Rent or a hotel you would not otherwise pay for, meals above your usual food spending, extra mileage, pet boarding. Your mortgage and your regular groceries stay yours, and the standard is your household's normal way of living.

Here is the clause from Liberty Mutual's LibertyGuard Deluxe Homeowners form, FMHO 943 (Ed. 11-96), the sample hosted by the Nevada Division of Insurance:

> a. Additional Living Expense, meaning any necessary increase in living expenses incurred by you so that your household can maintain its normal standard of living; or

That form lets an owner who lives in the home pick either additional living expense or the fair rental value of the part of the house they live in. Nevada and Maine later replaced that section with endorsements that pay additional living expense only, still with no month cap.

Safeco's homeowners form, HOM-7030 (January 2009 edition), uses nearly the same words:

> \1. If a loss covered under this Section makes that part of the residence premises where you reside uninhabitable we cover Additional Living Expense, meaning the necessary increase in living expenses you incur so that your household can maintain its normal standard of living.

Both forms add a civil authority part. If a government order keeps you out because of damage to a neighboring property, they pay for no more than two weeks. Both also say the time periods are not limited by the expiration of the policy, so a renewal date in the middle of your claim does not end anything.

Liberty Mutual's own coverage page lists hotel or rental home charges, increased food costs when your temporary home has no kitchen, pet boarding, extra utility costs, and laundry as the kinds of bills the coverage helps pay.

## How long does Liberty Mutual pay additional living expenses?

It depends on the form. The Liberty Mutual homeowners form we read pays for the shortest time needed to repair or replace the damage, or for your household to settle somewhere permanent, with no month cap. The Safeco homeowners form pays the same way but stops at 24 months.

Liberty Mutual, FMHO 943:

> Payment under a. or b. will be for the shortest time required to repair or replace the damage or, if you permanently relocate, the shortest time required for your household to settle elsewhere.

Safeco, HOM-7030:

> Payment shall be for the shortest time required, not exceeding 24 months, to repair or replace the damage or to permanently relocate.

On most claims the phrase that ends payments is shortest time required. They stop when the repair is done, usually well before any month cap. Give your claims representative a written timeline from your contractor early, and update it when the schedule moves.

If you rent rather than own, the clock is shorter. Liberty Mutual's renters form LMHO 2004 (12-17) and Safeco's renters form CHO-6004 both stop at 12 months.

One caution about all of these. They are sample forms filed with state regulators, the most recent we could find, from 1996 through 2020. Your own policy may be a newer edition. Your declarations page lists the form numbers that apply to you, and that is the version that controls your claim.

## How much will Liberty Mutual pay for temporary housing?

Up to the Coverage D limit on your declarations page, for costs that are a reasonable increase over your normal spending. That one number covers additional living expense, lost rent, and the civil authority part together, so money spent early in the claim is not there later.

Liberty Mutual's form says it in one line:

> The limit of liability for Coverage D is the total limit for all the coverages that follow.

Safeco's form is more specific: the total limit for additional living expense and loss of rent is stated on your declarations page and is the most Safeco will pay for all three parts combined. Safeco's form also says no deductible applies to this coverage. Liberty Mutual's website says whether a deductible applies depends on your policy.

### Is your limit enough?

We run this check with every family. Ask your contractor for a written repair timeline in months. Divide your Coverage D limit by those months. That is what you can spend each month on housing and every other added cost before the coverage runs out. Then compare the housing options against that number, not against each other.

If the math is tight, call us before you commit to anything. We'll go through it with you. For how insurers size these limits in general, see our guide to loss of use coverage (ALE) (https://agilervhousing.com/ale-coverage).

## Can you choose your own temporary housing on your Liberty Mutual claim?

Yes, as long as the choice is reasonable for your household. Liberty Mutual's claims page says your claims representative can help you find temporary housing, and that help is worth taking. You can also choose a reasonable option of your own, such as an RV on your property, and get it approved in writing first.

Your adjuster, or a temporary housing agency working on the claim, may suggest a hotel or a rental. Those suggestions are help, and often good help. They do not decide where your family lives. What the policy decides is what gets paid: the increase in your living costs needed to keep your household at its normal standard of living.

The step that protects you is simple. Get the housing and the nightly rate approved in writing before anyone moves in. We coordinate that approval with your adjuster or the housing agency on your file.

More on how this works, and what makes a choice reasonable: your right to choose reasonable temporary housing (https://agilervhousing.com/choose-your-temporary-housing).

## How do you ask Liberty Mutual for an RV?

Ask your claims representative directly, early, and in writing if you can. Say the home is not livable, that your family wants to stay on the property, and that a written estimate for a furnished RV is ready. Neither form lists approved housing types. They measure housing against your normal standard of living.

### What to say to your adjuster

> Our home is not livable and we want to stay on our property while it's repaired. Can we use a furnished RV placed here as our additional living expense housing? Agile RV Housing can send you a written estimate today.

### What to say if a housing agency is handling your housing

Some Liberty Mutual claims hand housing to a national temporary housing agency such as ALE Solutions, Alacrity, Sedgwick, CRS, or National Corporate Housing. Those agencies place families every day, and a household that already knows it wants an RV on its own property makes their job easier. Tell the agency coordinator:

> We want to stay on our property during the repair. Please add a furnished RV placed here to our housing options. Agile RV Housing can send you a written estimate today, and they already bill through your system.

### What we handle from there

- A zoning check for your property (https://agilervhousing.com/zoning-check), so the placement is allowed where you live.
- A site walk to plan where the unit sits and how it connects.
- A licensed electrician for the 50 amp outlet.
- The sewer tie-in.
- Delivery, leveling, and setup.
- Billing coordinated with Liberty Mutual or the housing agency, with an itemized invoice.

Move-in is usually about four days from approval. The main variable is scheduling the electrical contractor.

## Can you ask Liberty Mutual for an advance on additional living expenses?

You can ask, and Safeco has told policyholders so in writing. Loss of use is normally paid after you spend the money and send receipts. An advance is something your claims representative can approve, not something the policy promises, so ask in writing and say what the money is for.

Safeco's former loss of use page, archived in February 2026, said your claims representative may be able to give you an advance against the total settlement amount of your claim when you need to buy clothing or other necessities right away. See the archived Safeco page (https://web.archive.org/web/20260208131045/https://www.safeco.com/claims/home-claims/loss-of-use).

United Policyholders, a nonprofit that advises homeowners on claims, tells displaced families to ask the insurer for an advance while noting that "ALE benefits are generally paid on a reimbursement basis." See its property damage claims FAQ (https://uphelp.org/claim-guidance-publications/faqs-about-property-damage-insurance-claims/).

Put the request in writing, to your adjuster, and say what the money is for: deposits, the first weeks of meals, transportation, pet boarding. A short email is enough:

> Our home is not livable and we have moved out. Please consider an advance on our additional living expense coverage to cover our first weeks of displacement costs. We will submit receipts for everything it is used for.

The housing itself is often a separate question. On most of our placements the adjuster approves our written estimate and pays us directly, so the RV is not a cost your family fronts and waits to get back. When a housing agency manages the file, we bill through its system instead.

## Why does an RV stretch Liberty Mutual loss of use coverage further?

Because one unit sized to your household replaces the number of hotel rooms your family actually needs. A family of five needs two hotel rooms, and two rooms at typical adjuster-approved rates pass $140 a night before meals, pet fees, and laundry. One unit is $120 to $140 a night, tax included.

That is why an RV placement draws substantially less against your Coverage D limit each month than an extended hotel stay. The unit has a kitchen, so you are not expensing restaurant meals. The dog stays with you. The kids keep the same bus stop.

On a Liberty Mutual form with no month cap, the dollar limit is the only ceiling, so the monthly burn is the whole question. On a Safeco form with a 24 month cap, a slower burn is what keeps money in the pot for the last months of a long rebuild.

Our placements average about five months, with a 60 day minimum and month to month after that, so the housing follows the real repair schedule. Delivery and setup are quoted per property. ## Questions homeowners with Liberty Mutual and Safeco claims ask

### Are additional living expenses the same as loss of use on a Liberty Mutual policy?

For your purposes, yes. Liberty Mutual's website calls the coverage Additional Living Expenses and says it is also referred to as loss of use or ALE. Its homeowners form names the section Coverage D, Loss of Use, and additional living expense is the part that pays for housing.

### Is Liberty Mutual loss of use 12 months or 24 months?

It depends on the form. The Liberty Mutual homeowners form we read has no month cap. The Safeco homeowners form stops at 24 months. The renters forms for both brands stop at 12 months. Your declarations page lists your form numbers, and the payments end sooner if the repair finishes first.

### How much can I spend on temporary housing with Liberty Mutual?

Up to the Coverage D limit on your declarations page, and only on costs that are a reasonable increase over your normal spending. That one limit covers every part of loss of use. Divide it by your contractor's repair timeline to see what you can spend each month.

### Does Liberty Mutual pay for an RV on my property during repairs?

It can. Neither the Liberty Mutual nor the Safeco form lists approved housing types. Both measure housing against your household's normal standard of living, and an RV on your own property can meet that standard. Your claims representative approves it, and we prepare the written estimate.

### Does Safeco follow the same loss of use rules as Liberty Mutual?

Mostly, but the forms differ. Nevada's regulator lists Safeco within the Liberty Mutual group, and Safeco's claims pages now point to Liberty Mutual's claims center. Safeco's homeowners form caps additional living expense at 24 months, while the Liberty Mutual homeowners form we read has no month cap.

### Is there a deductible on Liberty Mutual loss of use?

On a Safeco policy, the form says no deductible applies to this coverage. Liberty Mutual's website says it depends on your policy, and the Liberty Mutual sample form does not address it. Ask your claims representative to confirm for your policy.

### Can I choose my own temporary housing with Liberty Mutual?

Yes, if the choice is reasonable for your household. Liberty Mutual's claims representatives can help you find housing, and you can also propose your own reasonable option, such as an RV on your property. Get the housing and the nightly rate approved in writing before you move in.
