Cold-weather RV living

Can You Live in an RV Through the Winter? Yes — Here's How We Make It Work

If your home repairs stretch into winter, one of the first questions homeowners ask is whether an RV is actually livable in the cold. The answer is yes — but only when it's done right, and that's where most RV rental companies fall short.

There's an important difference most people don't realize. "Winterizing" an RV usually means preparing it for storage — draining the water system and filling it with antifreeze so nothing freezes while it sits empty. That's the opposite of what you need. When you're living in the RV, you need the water running and the heat on all winter. That means keeping the plumbing warm and working, not draining it — a more involved job, and one we've handled in some of the coldest parts of the country without a hitch.

How we prepare an RV for winter living

We use four-season units when cold is in the forecast.

Four-season RVs are built for it — heated underbellies, heavier insulation, and dual-pane windows that hold heat far better than a standard camper.

    We skirt the RV.

We install insulated skirting around the base, sealing the underside from wind and cold and protecting the most freeze-vulnerable part of any RV — the exposed plumbing and tanks underneath.

    We add supplemental heat underneath.

Beyond the skirting, we use supplemental heaters to keep the underbelly and tank area above freezing on the coldest nights.

    We protect the water lines.

We heat-tape exposed lines and use heated water hoses at the connection points where freezing usually starts, so you keep running water even in a deep freeze.

    We keep your tanks safe.

Tank heaters on the fresh and holding tanks prevent freezing, so your water and waste systems stay functional through the winter.

The result: a warm, fully functional home through the winter, with running water, working plumbing, and reliable heat — handled entirely by us. We've kept homeowners comfortable through full winters in some of the coldest climates in the country.
